About this pdf password protector

We would rather tell you plainly than fake a feature that would not actually hold up. Reliable, audited password encryption for PDFs is not yet available in a fully browser-only tool, so this feature is intentionally left unimplemented here rather than offering something that looks secure but is not.

How pdf password protector works

Real PDF encryption needs a cryptography implementation that has been properly reviewed for security. We have not shipped that yet in this browser-only tool, rather than offer a weak or fake version of password protection, this page says so directly.

Common uses

  • Understanding why this specific feature isn't available yet
  • Finding a reliable alternative for password-protecting a PDF today

How to use this tool

  1. Open your PDF in a reader that supports password protection (such as Adobe Acrobat Reader or a modern browser's print dialog).
  2. Use its built-in "Protect," "Encrypt," or "Print to PDF with password" feature.
  3. Save the newly protected file.

What to know before using it

This feature does not currently exist. In the meantime: most operating systems let you print to a password-capable PDF printer, and most PDF readers (including free ones) have a built-in "Protect" or "Encrypt" option built specifically for this job.

Privacy and browser-first processing

No file is processed by this page, since the feature is not yet available.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't this tool add a password to my PDF?

Trustworthy password encryption needs a properly reviewed cryptography implementation, which does not yet exist in a lightweight, fully browser-only form. We would rather be upfront about that than offer something unreliable.

What should I use instead right now?

Your PDF reader almost certainly has a built-in password protection feature (look for "Protect," "Encrypt," or similar in the menu), which is built specifically for this and is the more reliable option today.
